A Guide to Drop-In Pots and Planters with Danae Horst

Even if you don’t have room for a huge assortment of pots and planters in your shop, a few key products can still help you serve customers with a broad array of tastes!

By focusing on collections with a wide range of sizes and colors, you’re sure to have something for anyone – from the earthy neutrals lover, to the bold color aficionado. Add in options like drop-in pots, as well as some with drainage and you’ll be ready to meet the needs of all of your plant customers – from seasoned plant pro, to first time plant parent.

Why Drop-in Pots?

  • Appeals to customers who prefer a tidy/streamlined look
  • No worry about risk of water spills or damage
  • Easy for plant parents who like to water at the sink or bottom water – no need to lug heavy pots to the sink, simply remove the grower pots
  • Gift ready! A plant plus a drop-in pot equals a plant gift complete with a look with no additional effort

PRO-TIP: For optimal plant health, encourage customers to remove the grower pots from the drop-in pot when it’s time to water, allow excess water to drain out, then return to the drop-in pot. This will keep plant roots healthy, which makes for happier plants!

Why Drainage?

  • Appeals to customers who prefer to pot their plants directly in a decorative pot, but still have a way for excess water to drain out- keeping plants healthier (some plant customers only want pots with drainage)
  • Easy for plant parents who like to bring a watering can around to their plants- coordinating saucers catch excess water/drips
  • Can also work as a drop-in pot

PRO-TIP: To avoid any potential pest issues (pests are attracted to, and can hatch out in standing water), remind customers to check saucers a few hours after watering and empty any excess water.

MOST VERSATILE POTS

Kendall Collection

With 7 sizes and 8 colors available, plus a terracotta option too, the classic cylinder-shaped Kendall is always a crowd favorite. Sized to fit most grower pots, drop-in ready Kendall makes it easy on you and your customers- from easy merchandising (no plastic rims sticking out of your nice pot display), to the simplicity of a ready-to-gift plant & pot combo. Plus, many plant lovers appreciate the flexibility of a cachepot setup, so they’ll be thrilled at the array of colors and sizes available in this staple collection.

PRO-TIP: Try merchandising by color stories, focusing on 2-3 colors per shelf, to encourage your customers to explore your whole store and all the products you offer, rather than just stopping at one wall of pots. Kendall coordinates easily with many other Accent Decor designs (including Romey and Beam), making it easy to build a few color stories unique to you.

Romey Collection

For customers who prefer drainage holes in their pots, Romey, with 6 sizes and 7 gorgeous colors, offers the perfect solution. While Romey can also fit most grower pots, the real attraction here is the amply sized drainage hole and the matching saucer- all at a price point that’s easy on customers’ budgets.

PRO-TIP: If space allows, consider offering a potting service for pots that have drainage holes- giving your customers an opportunity to watch and learn how to correctly pot a plant, or at least going home with one that has been!

Beam Collection

A more recent addition, that quickly became a fan favorite, Beam has recently expanded into 2 colors, and 5 sizes, plus a bowl version. The stylish ribbed design and matte glazes make Beam at once modern, yet classic. Sized to fit most grower pots, Beam is another drop-in ready collection that coordinates well with so many other pot styles/colors, making it easy to merchandise with.

PRO-TIP: Pick a handful of plants that you especially love in a particular color pot and merchandise them together to make it easy for customers to make a plant/pot pair. It’s always fun to see which plants look amazing when paired with bold colors like the ochre yellow Beam or cobalt blue Kendall.
