Your tablescape tutorial is beautiful and filled with great execution tips. Why did you choose these particular vessels?

I selected vessels unified by a creamy white color but diverse in both texture and shape. My goal was to highlight how the vessels alone can elevate the overall aesthetic, sometimes even allowing the flowers to take a secondary role. While flowers are, of course, central to any florist’s design, the realities of event planning—such as availability, sourcing, and quality consistency—can often limit floral options. This is particularly true for large events where consistency in flower quality and type is crucial.

By choosing a classic white-on-white theme—a perennial favorite for weddings—I aimed to demonstrate how vessels alone can add flair and interest to a design. This approach not only creates a visually striking and versatile tablescape design but also eases the pressure of sourcing the perfect or most expensive blooms. With the right selection of sculptural, unique vessels, you can achieve a stunning look using more standard flowers, allowing the design to feel elegant without depending entirely on florals.

Lys Lytle’s Essential Tips for Designing a Versatile Tablescape Design

Tip 1, ENSURE COHESION IN ELEMENTS: My first tip for designing an aesthetically pleasing tablescape is to ensure that each element connects to the others in some way. This creates a visual flow where no piece feels out of place in terms of color or texture. For example, in a white and orange tablescape, instead of using all white vessels and flowers with scattered oranges, I would opt for white vessels, flowers with white petals and orange centers, and then incorporate oranges into the setup. This linkage results in a cohesive and harmonious design.

Tip 2, CONSIDER DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE TABLESCAPE: It’s important to consider the various levels of the tablescape: what’s on the table, what’s just above the table (such as vessels), and what’s on top of the vessels (like flowers). Strive for balance across these three layers, ensuring that each one includes thoughtful details that enhance the overall aesthetic. This layered approach adds depth and visual interest to the design, making it feel more dynamic and intentional.

Tip 3, SIMPLIFY YOUR CONCEPT: My third tip is to tone down your initial idea. It’s tempting to incorporate every creative thought into one design, but this often results in a chaotic, overly maximalist look. Focus on one unique element or idea you want to highlight and save the other ideas for future projects. A single, well-executed concept can have a more substantial impact and maintain the aesthetic appeal of your tablescape without overwhelming it.
