Behind Our Handmade Portuguese Pots

Grab your passports and journey to Porto, Portugal’s second largest city. Known for eclectic and artsy neighborhoods, restaurants, stately bridges and a rich artistic heritage perfected by dedicated artisans. On a quest to create a collection of large and sculptural pots, we found ourselves enveloped in the magic of Porto and its centuries-old ceramics techniques.

The collection was as a response to growing customer feedback. Our call-to-action was the creation of large pots for plants featuring drop-in-ready pot sizes that would add dimension to any surface or space while feeling unique and sculptural with high-quality craftsmanship. Turning to artisans in Porto would ensure the ultimate in artistry while creating pots that would stand the test of time and trend. Pots of such scale would prove welcoming for plant lovers and interior designers seeking sleek options to complement a variety of design styles.

“Once we collected feedback and sketched an early-stage design plan, we were ready to explore Porto,” explained Caroline Woods, Accent Decor’s Design Manger. “We have an amazing roster of valued partners across the globe. However, we recognized the challenge of hand-crafting substantial ceramic vessels. There’s a great deal of required hand pulling and expertise. We knew Porto was a hub for artists who’ve mastered this skill.”

“We wanted the new collection to feel like a homage to handmade artistry. When we toured our partner’s factory, we were warmly greeted by the owners and escorted on a tour. We spent the day watching the hand-making of countless items. It’s mesmerizing – watching raw clay start as a chunk from a massive mound to a finalized piece of a flawless art,” shared Woods. “The finishing touches were equally fun to watch. All the painting, special finishes and textures are dutifully hand applied.”

Fast forward to present-day and the collection of large pots for plants, created in beautiful Porto, are stunning examples of craft and function. Each product is hand painted offering natural durability and pigment from the Portuguese clay. In production, the excess clay which remains after completion is gathered and added to a clay stockpile for rework, minimizing excess waste. The trend-forward designs fused with the expert skills of Portuguese potters resulted in a series of products that are timeless and functional – a direct response to our valued customers.
