Event Decor With Impact: A Conservatory Stand Tutorial

Floral designers seeking show-stopping wedding and event decor have long turned to Accent Decor. With a growing demand for large scale products supporting the needs of eco-friendly floral design, Accent Decor introduced the Conservatory Stand offering both custom features and impactful versatility. Read on to learn more about the Conservatory Stand and a step-by-step design tutorial with a long-time floral partner, Christina Yan.

Get to Know Christina Yan
The owner of two distinct floral businesses, Christina Yan has been a mover and shaker in the design industry for several years. Christina’s design philosophy is rooted in much more than just traditional floral technique. As a self-taught florist, Christina lends her style to her years prior as an artist of other mediums. Based in Napa, Christina owns and operates Bellevue Floral Co., a boutique floral design and event styling studio, and Camino, a downtown Napa based boutique. Additionally, Christina created Mise en Fleur to offer her floral and business expertise to others.

Flowers and Expertise
Mise en Fleur is a one-of-a-kind educational experience merging hands-on floral design, education, and community in a welcoming and inspirational environment. Mise en Fleur has grown from a one-time event in Napa to a destination retreat in picturesque and creative cities around the world. Open to florists and floral enthusiasts of all experience levels, each retreat is centered around a hands-on floral design intensive accompanied by a business course. In March 2024, Atlanta served as Mise en Fleur’s host city with participants converging in Accent Decor’s headquarters.

During Mise en Fleur Atlanta, Christina facilitated various interactive designs and wedding and event decor installation workshops. Her signature demonstration featured a romantic and lush take on the new Conservatory Stand.

The Ultimate Showstopper
Launched in January 2024, the Conservatory Stand is a runaway hit thanks to its impactful beauty and versatility coupled with thoughtful design features. Comprised of stands in two heights, 72 inches and 95 inches, they can stand alone or create an asymmetrical shape. The Conservatory Stand is a welcomed solution for eco-friendly florists seeking a versatile floral stand for weddings. Typically, large-scale event decor products require the usage of foam to create lush, impactful designs with a water source. Alternatively, the Conservatory Stands feature removable vases (sold separately) sized to hold water and support unique foam-free mechanics. The water-tight vases can be arranged in advance and inserted within the stands during event set-up. When the event wraps, the stands break down easily for tear-down and transport.

A Step-by-Step Mise en Fleur Tutorial
Christina’s pro-tips and steps to create a romantic and lush Conservatory Stand statement are outlined below, straight from her Mise en Fleur demonstration.

STEP 1. Beyond adding chicken wire to the Conservatory Stand’s water vessels, create additional pockets of wire throughout the stand. This provides more foliage structure and additional stability if foam cages are incorporated into the mechanics.

STEP 2. Once the mechanics are secured, start with branchy foliage. Remember, not all foliage requires water immersion. Secure Smilax using small zip ties at key points, then weave it in and out of the structure organically. Huckleberry is another favorite foliage as its hardy, economical, and blends seamlessly with Smilax.

STEP 3. Begin inserting flowers, starting first with bulkier stems like hydrangea and roses to create volume. Delicate and/or unique flowers should be placed last with intention.

STEP 4. When using delicate and daintier blooms like Sweet Pea, be sure to concentrate a mass in one area. This makes an impactful statement ensuring premium blooms aren’t lost within the installation.

STEP 5. Finish by using shorter stems of foliage to cover up mechanics. Huckleberry and Salal are great go-to varieties creating a perfectly polished final look. For installations with dusty greenery, opt for short pieces of Spiral Eucalyptus for the finishing step.
