Jason Lai Gives His Take on Home Accents

In a new home series, we’re chatting with a group of interior design powerhouses to get their expert take on home accents and the products they’d love to use in upcoming projects.

Meet Jason Lai, Owner / Principal Designer, JL Interiors

Jason’s role as Principal Designer is influenced from 15 years of experience in the design industry coupled with his marketing background. He’s mastered an array of styles; from contemporary to traditional and anything in between. His work was featured on Bravo’s Best Room Wins! where he took the crown for contemporary design, Million Dollar Listing LA, and Open House on NBC showcasing his personal home in Santa Monica, CA. Jason has been featured in multiple publications including the Los Angeles Times and Elle Decor.

We love seeing the pops of freshness in your projects by way of beautiful plants and florals. What tips & tricks do you have for integrating greenery and fresh florals into your projects? Any lessons learned along the way?

Over the years, we’ve encountered clients that are intimidated by the maintenance some plants and florals require. Additionally, we’ve struggled to source realistic faux options. Along the way, we fell in love with utilizing moss. A key tip is to fill the bottom of a decorative vase or pot with recycled paper before adding a thin layer of moss. It offers a fresh pop of green with zero maintenance. We love moss so much that we buy it in bulk. There’s always room for “more moss!”

We also love the oversized florals or plant statement, but store-bought stems are usually “not it.” My tip is to source a realistic faux tree and utilize those branches. Although it’s an investment, you can utilize the branches repeatedly thanks to their lushness.

When sourcing home accents, what are some must-have traits or features you look for?

When sourcing home accents for a client, I love finding decorative elements that are unique with unexpected features. I want the accents to feel bespoke and thoughtfully selected. The color and shape are mission critical.

You’ve got a great eye for the perfect finishing touches. What are your go-to home accents and what’s on your wish list?

The Jeva Collection is a must! Whether the planters are used indoors or outdoors they pack a punch – I love their scale. The Dache Pots have that fun and unique shape I’m always searching for. The Newport Tall Bowl is a can’t-go-wrong classic. The concrete element looks cool and pairs well with moss.

I’ve got my eyes on the Otilia Collection because of that unique, one-of-a-kind shape I crave. The plaster look is everywhere and the Proton Pot is really on-trend. My final wish list item is the Trabar Collection – I love the hit of black!
