Lys Lytle’s Essential Tips for Designing an Impactful Suspended Installation:

Suspended floral installations have so much potential to transform a space. Since they aren’t tied to a surface or container, you have more freedom to create something dynamic that interacts with the entire room. They’re an opportunity to play with texture, flow, and movement in ways that grounded arrangements just can’t.

Tip 1: EMBRACE DRAPING TEXTURES
Suspended installations are perfect for ingredients that naturally drape and cascade, creating a sense of flow and drama. Think hanging amaranthus, wisteria, or tropical elements like heliconia or hanging ginger—basically, anything that feels like it’s moving. These textures are hard to replicate in standard arrangements, but when they’re used overhead, they create this free-flowing, striking effect that instantly draws the eye.

Tip 2: BALANCE HEAVY DRAPING WITH AIRY MOVEMENT
While draping elements create drama, too much can feel visually heavy. To balance, mix in lighter textures that seem to float upward like grasses, delicate branches, or airy blooms. This contrast creates dimension and keeps the design from feeling bottom-heavy. One tip: don’t cluster the airy pieces right on top of the draping ones. Instead, space them out across the design so it feels more balanced. Let some areas look like they’re reaching up toward the ceiling while others cascade downward—it creates a natural, dynamic flow.

Tip 3: FOCUS ON THE OVERALL IMPACT
With suspended installations, you must think “big picture”. These designs aren’t about small details—they’re about transforming the entire space. Instead of relying on a ton of specialty flowers that only look good close-up, lean into a few key textures in large quantities. Ingredients with interesting shapes or light-catching qualities work especially well. For example, if you’re repeating suspended designs throughout a space, it’s usually better to keep it simple. Stick to a few high-impact ingredients and repeat them to make the whole room feel intentional and cohesive, rather than overcomplicating with different elements.

Suspended installations are all about movement, balance, and creating an experience. When you focus on flow and texture, you can completely change the feel of a space, making it bold, memorable, and unlike anything else.
